WAYS TO PREVENT NIHL:
LOWER THE VOLUME
Turn down the volume when listening to mp3 players, the radio or TV.
Listen to mp3 players at no more than 60- 75% of the maximum volume for no more than 60- 90 minutes a day.
Helpful tip: Noise cancellation headphones or buds can help you keep the volume down by reducing the noise around you and making it less likely that you will raise the volume to drown out outside noise.
Helpful tip: iPods have the ability to set a volume limit so that you don't raise the volume above safe levels. To set a volume limit on your iPod go to "settings".
WEAR EAR PROTECTION
Ear protection, such as noise reduction earplugs, decreases the intensity of noise and helps preserve hearing. Wear ear protection when around sounds louder than 85 decibels for a long period of time.
Helpful tip: Look for protection that has a noise reduction rating (NPR) of at least 9 dB. The louder the sounds, the greater the NPR numbers should be for adequate noise protection.
Avoid being around sounds that are dangerous to your hearing. This is the most effective way to prevent NIHL.
If you suspect hearing loss consult a physician or an audiologist and get your hearing tested. Early detection and therapy may sometimes avoid serious damage. However, hearing loss is often permanent and the best way to protect your hearing is prevention.
